Sunrise and Shaft just teamed up for the first time ever. And the anime they picked? Fool Night. I’m still processing this.
Here’s everything we know about the fool night anime release date so far, plus my honest take.
So what actually happened?
Netflix announced the adaptation at Annecy this week. It’s the first-ever collaboration between Sunrise (Gundam, Cowboy Bebop) and Shaft (Madoka Magica, Monogatari). That’s a huge deal. Two completely different studio styles, one show.
We got a teaser trailer, key visuals, and full cast/staff details. No actual episodes yet though.
Okay but when is it actually coming out?
Short answer: we don’t know the exact date.
Netflix has only released a teaser so far, confirming global distribution but no specific launch schedule. What’s locked in is the year — it’s set to premiere worldwide sometime in 2026. So a Fool Night release schedule with actual dates is still TBA. It’s coming. We just don’t know the month yet.
Where will you actually be able to watch it?
This is the easy part. Netflix confirmed the series will be available globally through their platform only. One login, no splitting across apps to track it down.
Quick heads up if you’re checking Crunchyroll
I know a lot of people assume this by default, but no — this one’s not landing there. Crunchyroll News covered the announcement (they cover pretty much everything anime), but the actual show is Netflix-only. Don’t go checking your queue.
The story (quick version)
Earth’s been dark under clouds for 100 years. Oxygen’s running out. Humanity invented “transfloration” — turning dying people into plants to generate air. Our main character Kamiya is broke, caring for his sick mom, and considering doing it himself.
Bleak. Original. Kind of can’t wait.
My Honest Review
Why I’m hyped
- Sunrise x Shaft is a genuinely rare pairing, could be visually incredible
- Story feels fresh, not another isekai copy-paste
- Director worked on Suzume, so the visual quality bar is already high
Why I’m holding back excitement
- Zero confirmed release date is rough, just a teaser to go on
- Premise is heavy and dark, won’t be everyone’s vibe
- First-time studio collab is exciting but unproven until more footage drops
I’m cautiously obsessed already. The manga’s had a loyal fanbase for years, and this finally feels like its moment. But I need more than a teaser before I go full hype mode.
What do you think, when’s it actually dropping? Drop your guess below.
